More than half a billion people, or one in 10 adults worldwide, are obese — more than double the number in 1980 — as the obesity epidemic spills over from wealthy into poorer nations, researchers said on Thursday. And while rich nations made big strides in cutting rates of high cholesterol and hypertension, or high blood pressure, the overall number of people with high blood pressure rose from 600 million in 1980 to nearly 1 billion in 2008, fuelled by an aging and expanding global population.

The food industry announced it would use a series of symbols on the front of food packages to inform consumers about the nutrition quality of its products. The announcement was made by two large industry trade groups, the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers of America.

Canadian Health Measures Survey: Physical activity of youth and adults Jan 19, 2011
New international and proposed Canadian guidelines recommend that to obtain substantial health benefits, adults should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a week. According to new data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS), 15% of Canadian adults attain this level of activity.The guidelines also suggest that young people aged 5 to 17 should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. CHMS data indicated that 7% of young people attain this level of activity.

Canada’s beverage industry announced that they will soon be prominently displaying exactly how many calories are in their products. Not only will calorie labels be clear and identical on the front of all cans and bottles of drinks, juice, and pop but calories will also be prominently displayed on vending machine and on fountain dispensers controlled by the beverage industry.

In 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama asked industry to develop a front-of-pack labeling system that could be widely adopted on food packages and that would help busy consumers – especially parents – make informed decisions when they shop. In response, America’s food and beverage manufacturers and retailers have joined forces to develop and implement the Nutrition Keys initiative, an unprecedented voluntary front-of-pack nutrition labeling system that will provide nutrition information on the front of food and beverage packages, including calories and three “nutrients to limit.”
